Oops … make that GigPress 1.1.1
Posted by Derek on Sunday, December 2nd, 2007.
Ack - that was quick. Unfortunately I missed a small typo in the code that generated the upcoming shows sidebar in version 1.1 of earlier today. It affects the output only when using the template tag (not the widget), and using the option to segment the listing into tours. If you downloaded version 1.1 (all 5 of you!), please upgrade to version 1.1.1 to avoid any problems.

We love this plugin. However, we are not a band but a comic book podcast. We use it to list our upcoming events we are attending: comic shop store events and comic conventions.

nice plug-in. was wondering if there’s a way to link the shows in the sidebar to the show details on the website instead of the venue website. thanks.

@Kris - thanks for the note - good to know the plugin’s being used outside the original audience, I love that.
@Jim - not currently, no. I may add an option where you can enter the full URI to your shows listing page in your options, and then a link to that page will be displayed at the end of your sidebar listing (”View all shows” or something similar.) Would that be helpful in this regard?

great plugin….would love to see a “time” field added and the ability to not show the country when displaying dates. Also, sometimes when i add a date it confirms that it’s been added but it doesn’t show up. Then i have to do the whole date over again for it to take.

Hi there Derek.
Very nice plugin. Congratulations.
I have two questions:
01. I would like to know if there is a way to put GigPress not only visible for Administrator users, but also for Editors and Authors. Even with Role Manager plugin installed I can’t do it.
02. Is there a way to add time besides date to a show?
Thanks in advance.

@matt, @ricardo - I’ll be adding a “time” field in the next point release.
@ricardo - perhaps I should lower the user threshold to use GigPress - or maybe make it an option. In the meantime, you could easily change this by changing the 4th parameter of each add_menu_page/add_submenu_page function starting at line 104 in the plugin code. Currently it’s set to 8 - you could lower this as you wish.

Thanks for the reply.
That did the trick.
As for the time field, nothing to do ’till the next point release. ;)

Great plugin! We’ve just started using it on Back-on Online and it’s a godsend! We’ve been using an Events plugin up till now, but it isn’t that easy to maintain (have to keep updating template when the plugin is updated) and this makes life much easier! Like matt has pointed out, a time field would be really useful!
Aside from that, I was wondering if you had considered a calendar format widget/sidebar that would allow visitors to view the dates in a different format?
Thanks again :)
p/s: Just had a thought - I think I may be using Gigpress as a Fixtures manager on another sport club website. Is there an easy way of adding custom fields to allow e.g. a post match review (e.g. main news post) to be associated with the entry?

@Flick: I don’t have plans right now to implement a calendar-style format to be honest, as it’s not really very useful generally. As far as linking each date to a post, you can do this by using the notes field quite easily (by hard-coding a link.)

This looks like something that I could use for a few different blogs, including my hockey blog. There are two things I was wondering.
1) Can you link to another page in each listing. For instance, a forum page that discusses that show.
2) Can you set a span of dates for one show? I tour on a Broadway musical, and we do at least 4 weeks in a venue, and on other shows, I do at least one week in a city. Can I have a listing that would show the span of dates?

— that would be nice, although a link like that can easily be created by adding a text widget below the gigpress one, one without a title and just that link . thanks.

Upon activating the plugin, there was a brief message:

@Derek: Thanks for your reply :) I’ll try out using the notes part to link the event to a post! Just wondering if it’s possible to use one of the feed formats to display as a calendar.
Happy New Year!

@Tapeleg - you can use the “notes” field to add any basic HTML, so yeah, that could be a link to a blog or forum post if you like. Re: date spans for shows, I’m looking at adding that to the next version, or sometime thereafter. (I hope to have an incremental release out in the next couple of weeks.)
@Frank - odd that you’re getting that MySQL error. I assume this shuts down the plugin on you? It fails to activate and that’s it? Maybe email me with more details …
@Flick - I don’t plan on adding calendar-style display options to the plugin, but you can certainly manipulate the data from the RSS feed however you like.

I’m really loving this plug-in!
Actually it’s solved one of the final issues that was holding me back from migrating to Wordpress…
I’ve got a couple of suggestion that I feel would really add to the plug-in;
- Set date, venue & city too TBA (to be announced) or TBC (to be confirmed)
- Set price etc. too N/A and only have the information field show up in the listings if any of the fields have been set.
Thanks for a great plug-in!

@torgeir - Glad the plugin could be of help! Regarding TBAs - generally if you don’t have a date, then there’s no point in listing anything, hence the lack of an option for TBA for that field. For city and venue, you can type in anything you like, so feel free to enter TBA or TBC.
The “price” field will only show up if a price is entered, as with the “address” and “notes” fields. I’ll be doing the same for the “age restrictions” field in the next update as well.

Thanks for your quick reply!
A quick question on sorting, how are the tours sorted when they are listed?
And also I found a typo, in the country list Bangladesh is spelled with two B’s (BBangladesh)

@torgeir - Thanks for the typo notification! Currently tours are sorted in the order in which they were created.

ok, I’ll just fake it it the database then!
I also found another issue in the country list, Netherlands is between Dominican Republic & Ecuador instead of being down there with the other “N” countries and that made it really hard to find… ;)

Still loving this and really glad to know that the “age” think will only show if something is entered in the next release. I did not know I could use code in the notes field, that ROCKS SO HARD because our site is a blog + a forum. Thanks again for this great great plugin.

I echo all the praises for this plug-in. It’s great.
I was wondering lots of the same things that have already been addressed, but one thing I’m still wondering, and anxiously awaiting, is this: When do you think the next version will be out?
I look forward to being able to add multiple bands and spanned dates and sorting tours. Again, great work Derek, seriously.

Wordpress and this plugin is all new to me. But it looks promising for my website.
I need to enter multiple bands / artists since we are a record company. Any updates on this?

Hi. Great plugin! I was just wondering if you’ve considered terminology options for non-bands. Like Kris Black mentioned, many other types of organizations would find this useful—music venues, churches, theaters, schools, sports leagues, etc. The possibilities would be endless. the only thing stopping me from using this plugin is the terminology “Shows & Tours.” It would be awesome if those were editable so the user could describe what they are. For instance, Shows & Tours could be “Events & Multi-day Events” or “Workshops & Conferences” or “Episodes & Shows” or “Games & Seasons” or… The possibilities are endless. Again, great plugin!
